Welmoed Wagenaar (NL)

Welmoed Wagenaar is a PhD researcher at the Department of Comparative Study of Religion of the University of Groningen and former junior researcher at the Meertens Institute, who is interested in storytelling and world-building practices. Currently she carries out an individual research project funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) on ritual and sacralization in the everyday life of media fans, specifically in relation to the use of online platforms. In the past, she conducted research on open church initiatives—church buildings open to the public outside of religious ceremonies—in collaboration with the Dutch national museum for the art, history and culture of Christianity, Museum Catharijneconvent.

As part of the HERILIGION project, Welmoed examines the heritagization of the St Martin Celebrations in the Dutch city of Utrecht, an annual event that in recent years has taken on new forms and meanings.
